review 1: A brilliant re-imagining of a what is a brief segment of Homer's classing The Iliad.Personally I enjoyed the first segment on Achilles better, but in all it was a really great read. It's filled with countless examples of beautiful imagery that makes it stand out from any other historical fiction of it's kind.After reading this, I'd really love to see Malouf take on the ancient myth of Icarus. That would be fantastic.
review 2: So, another re-telling of the Illiad. Ransom is beautifully written and wonderfully characterised, with Achilles, Priam and Somax, a new character, fully realised. Malouf explores themes of love, grief, forgiveness and the role of story-telling. The question is, do we need another re-telling. The original is pretty good so new versions ne
... moreed to bring something special to the table. Malouf almost brings it off, but in the end, despite the beautiful writing, I think he falls short. The concentration on the three main characters leaves the book short of the emotional power of the Illiad, as we are told very little of Hector and nothing of Helen. Still a very enjoyable read that could have been much more than that. less

Malouf is a beautiful writer. I read and reread some of his lines just enjoy the poetic imagery.
