review 1: I'm going back and forth between a 3 and a 4 on this, and I'm going to settle on a 3. I loved the way Morrell drew me into 19th century London, and how historically accurate everything (including the slang) seemed to be. I also liked that the villain's identity was kept secret for so long - and how it tied back to earlier murders. The reason I'm not going for the 4 is because I found the "John Williams - John Williamson" link to be stretching my credulity.
review 2: Definitely atmospheric, mystery was so-so, got a little a tired of the author dropping in Historical Facts at the weirdest times.... ... morestruction of a park, etc. I appreciate it when authors do extensive research for their novels (and clearly Morrell did!), but I prefer that research to be incorporated subtly and not in strangely-placed info-dumps. less

I thought this was going to be a cool Victorian thriller and murder mystery but it was so much more.
