review 1: This was an exciting thriller - and with a main character, that other than a love of sports, was not at all reminiscent of Andy Carpenter. It was also devoid of dogs, which was more surprising than all of the twists of the largely unpredictable plot. And the plot was very well constructed! The characters were all likable and it was certainly a fast read. In fact, I read it in one sitting. Though the Carpenter series is more amusing, I think that the level of excitement in this book was much higher than some of his others. The ending, however, was wrapped up a little to abruptly, but other than that, this was a terrific thriller!
review 2: Chris Turley is a reporter for a small newspaper in present day New Jersey. The son of a deceased investigative journalist
... morewith a legendary reputation, he has some big shoes to fill but is certain he never will. A sudden break comes his way when a tipster calls, out of the blue, and promises him a shocking expose. While Chris waits for the meeting he witnesses a horrific explosion and as a first responder saves several lives. His firsthand account of the catastrophe make him a local hero but he soon finds, that for reasons unknown, he becomes the story. He discovers that the tipster is a homicidal maniac using him as the connection to publicize his next planned crime and after several deaths and much mayhem the public, as well as the authorities, begin to suspect the reporter is somehow in collusion with the killer. This fast moving crime-thriller takes several twists and turns and keeps the reader guessing until the conclusion with only a couple of cheap giveaways along the way. Oh well, it’s still a good, fast, entertaining read. less

None of Rosenfelt's standalones are all that great, but this is the worst. Characters? Plot? Ahem.
