review 1: I read this to my 8 year old son and we both really liked it. Excellent book to read aloud. There are a heap of 'made-up' words and there are 'alerts' so the kids can find the made-up word on the page. This could be a great tool to help struggling readers as it adds another dimension to the story and sounding out words that aren't really can provide kids with opportunities to be successful - as their is no right answer! It was also fun to read them!I would recommend a younger child up to about age 9 - 10. There are some gross scenes, like the protagonist having all his teeth removed by a psychotic dentist!! and the death of his father - so possibly not suitable for all kids. Despite the tragic circumstances it does have a happy ending. Funny to read out loud. Some ver... morey gross images, boys gets all his teeth removed, eye balls hidden under pillows etc. Remember just how much kids love yucky and scary!
review 2: What a great book! I have been reading this book to my almost six year old son and we were both hooked from the beginning. A great mix of characters and a really good level of humour that appealed to both my son and I. On first seeing the book title I was a little apprehensive that it might cause an unhelpful fear of dentists, but it doesn't. It has been well written so that the demon dentist is clearly a fictional character but is still a believable part of the story. less
