review 1: Like most of Walliams' books I find most of the characters believable (especially Mr Stink and Chloe) and the narrative reasonably well written but there is a saccharine quality to parts of this story that are just too much! It is a shame that Walliams pours it on so thick. Mr Stink contains illustrations by Quentin Blake, who famously drew for Roald Dahl. If only Walliams had taken a leaf out of his book (any of them would have done) and not tried to twist the story into some overly-pleasant arc. Without giving too much away, there are a couple of characters that seem to have personality transplants just so the author can have his happy ending. Having had my whinge, I should note that this isn't a terrible book by any means but it could have been better.David Walliams has... more written a number of books now. One of the delightful things about them (or the ones I've read so far) have been the cameo appearances of Raj the shopkeeper and his corner store. This is a clever device, providing cohesion for the readers in otherwise disparate stories (it also brings a sense of 'neighbourhood' to them).
review 2: Wow, I have just finished reading this book and I thought, near the ending, it was touching. The story of Mr Stink's life was shocking and sad as well! Personally, I do not think the book was extremely funny. It takes a lot to make me laugh. I am rating this a four because I wanted it to be more absorbing as it was not really like the other books I have read. Although, I recommend this book to everyone one and it certainly was a good read. less
