review 1: This book made me giggle out loud. What a fun, whimsical little book. I really liked the way that David Wiesner played with art conventions and art styles in this book. It was a lot of fun, and since I like art, I appreciated his somewhat subtle nods to various styles. I also liked the typography, which seems like a weird thing to comment on in a children's book, but it's used very well to distinguish between the more serious Art and the wacky, enthusiastic Max. I also loved the uses of bright colors! And, of course, lizards are always amusing.
review 2: David Wiesner's illustrations are gorgeous. The book makes me feel out of this world beautiful. The image of all the colors splitting out of Art after Max "paints" him just stays imbedded in my mind. The story
... moreis about how Max (frog) also wants to create art like Art (or Arthur; dinosaur). The theme is not to underestimate anyone's ability, just as Max proved his own brilliance. David Wiesner's drawings were detail oriented and splashing with colors. Through his drawings, he demonstrates how Max re-paints/re-creates Art! From a pile of "lines", Max re-structures Art's framework, then uses a vacuum cleaner to collect all the colors that spilled off him, and re-blasts them back onto Art. Art becomes even more brilliant than he already was. Art, as a concept and not as the character in this book, is being able to see beyond one angle, being able to stretch beyond the limit, and that is exactly what Max does and in the end, influences Art too. Art ends up with a skin of pointillated colors, very much like what inspired Impressionism. This book can be a book for all ages but perhaps for the toddler and beyond! less
