review 1: This creative tale takes the reader on the painting adventure of two friends, Max (a lizard) and Arthur (a dragon?). Although a little difficult to discern at times, Arthur is a good artist (or so he thinks) and he views Max as a bit if a nuisance, despite Max's eagerness to impress his large friend with his not-so-good painting abilities. When Max accidentally paints Arthur and changes his color, Arthur is not happy. Max tries to fix his mistake, but he keeps making things worse. In fact, they get so bad that Arthur disappears altogether and Max is left with nothing but a puddle of colors and a messy outline of his friend. Max thinks hard about how he can bring Arthur back and finally decides to recreate Arthur's outline by redrawing him. Once Arthur has returned to... more his normal shape, Max adds an array of brilliant color and turns Arthur into an even better dragon than he was before. This story is a wonderful combination of the fantasy/science fiction genre, and portrays the two fictional characters in a comical and light-hearted manner. Children will easily identify with the actions of Arthur and Max, especially if they have siblings, as the annoyance Arthur has for Max is creatively humorous. The author's creative illustrations of the two friends compliments their personalities well and holds the attention of the reader to the very end. The use of detail and color are the unwritten subject of this book, as Max mistakenly alters Arthur's appearance. Although Arthur is upset with Max for doing so, Max's use of color and detail turn Arthur into an even better looking dragon. The use of this book to teach the importance of color and detail to elementary age students would be a fascinating idea. The pictures in the book compliment the text nicely, and provide for opportunities of closer examination as the book is being read. Teachers could use the book to convey the importance of detail in reading, writing, or any other subject where students are asked to provide detail. Though portrayed in a fun-loving way, the lesson the book provides is essential to developing good readers and writers of all ages and abilities.
review 2: Reading Level: Kindergarten This book is one of my favorite picture books I have ever read, for the illustrations are extremely cute with a great storyline to follow. This is the story of two lizards named Art and Max. Art is the lizard that is extremely artistic and is trying to teach his friend Max his abilities. Through the teaching, the lizards create hilarious adventures, creating the hilarious book that this is. I definitely believe this will be a book included in my classroom library, as well as being incorporated in a classroom activity. A lesson idea that could follow the reading of this book is to have the students recreate Max’s drawing, and then explain why they made the changes they did. This would be a great classroom activity because of the duality it serves, having the students participate in a writing and art exercise. I highly recommend elementary teachers taking a look at this book. less

The book Art and Max by David Wiesner starts out with tan end pages. I believe that the illustrator chose tan as the end pages because it symbolizes the desert sand. This book is also set up with a horizontal landscape. Throughout the book there is a transition between full bleeds, double full bleeds, and borders. The illustrator uses all of the different types of borders so that he can get his story across perfectly through the pictures as well as the text. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. I thought it was extremely creative.

I read Art & Max for the first time and the over-all theme of the this picture could be thought of as creativity, or understanding of differences. The colors throughout the book are generally muted except for when he paints all over Arthur (Art). The pictures are full bleed on every page but there is a rare occasion when the page is split into several different pictures. It is definitely a good book for younger readers.
