review 1: A step out of the norm for David Wiesner, Art & Max is a children's picture book with words. This fun story of an artistic duo in the desert who turn from painting on canvas, to painting on cactus. This book has wonderful and vibrant colors that pop off of the page against the desert backdrop. A good children's book to read for all ages, especially beginning readers because of the easy flow of the book and sentences.
review 2: Beautiful artwork as always from Wiesner, but the story is extremely confusing, I had to read and reread the first couple of pages to figure out who was saying what. The style of the story telling leaves much to be desired. Not so sure I like the story either. The little lizard completely messes up the big lizard by painting him, but
... morein the end the big lizard is okay with it. No consequences for the little guy. The concepts here are pretty mature too. I don't know that young children would get it.Would I recommend this book? NO. Beautiful artwork, but not enough incentive to buy the book. less

Wiesner does the most amazing things with the picture book format. I'm dazzled by his virtuosity in so many styles. I'm awed by the humor he manages to imbue every picture with. If you haven't checked out any of his work, it's probably because you're an adult who doesn't read picture books, because they're for kids. Pish, tosh. There is a narrative here, but like the best cartoons, it's going to sail right over the heads of children. Go, get a stack of his books and just wallow in the artistry. And laugh. And shake your head, and then you'll grab someone and say, "you've got to see this."

We have all come upon a time where we where put out of our comfort zone and forced to try something new. This is a story of the master and the apprentice. It teaches us that even when a little hesitant, we should remain courageous and curious of the unknown. We should embrace the opportunity to learn and not be afraid of mistakes and failure. Art and Max are painters who are en captivated in art that provides a vehicle of expression and free of critical critique. I would recommend this book to any child afraid of the unknown but ready to get their feet messy and wet.
