review 1: I am a huge Dean Hughes fan for two reasons. First, I think he develops characters well, making the books he writes very readable. Second, he does his research. I really appreciate being able to read a book and know that the author knows his stuff and that what he writes is accurate. Even when he is giving dialog for historical figures he uses what he has learned about their personalities and speaking styles to recreate a realistic and accurate presentation of the words they may have said and the way they may have said them. I can't wait to read the second book!
review 2: I love Dean Hughes' writing! The characters seem like real people; the way he develops the characters make them seem like people I could get to know and understand. The characters in Th
... moree Wind and the Waves came right into my heart; I care about them and pray for their success in the problems they are facing. This particular story has especial interest for me since I have a daughter in law who is from Manchester England, and our son, her husband served his mission there. I have come to love England; I always have since I started reading Agatha Christie mysteries in my twenties and read most of them. Also being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I know of the missionary work of Wilford Woodruff, and so a story about those people he brought into the gospel is doubly interesting. Having the author weave two stories--one set in Wilford Woodruff's time and the converts he brought in, and the modern-day family who are descendants of those converts--makes the story very interesting. I loved this book, and was not ready for the story to end. Good thing. There are two more books in the series. I have downloaded the second book already. I care about these people, and can't wait to see how their lives unfold. less
