review 1: If you are interested in the history of Nauvoo, then this book might hold your interest. There are two stories going on. One set back as Nauvoo is being settled in the 1800's the other in current day. The story in the 1800's is much more interesting. I picked up book 2 in the series and read about a third of it, and though the history is interesting, Hughes couldn't hold my interest through a second book. I gave up and took it back to the library. A bit boring.
review 2: I really enjoy the 'early pioneer' time period in which this book is mainly set. I understand Hughes' incorporation of the modern story, but I didn't enjoy those parts as much. I don't know why exactly, if it was her often deflated attitude, but I found the character Abby very irksome. If
... more I had to compare, I read the 'Work and the Glory' series some years back and found it a much more historically rich read. less
