Lady Julia Grey
review 1: Lady Julia's travels take her from the wuthering heights of Yorkshire in the last book to the Himalayas in this one, with an idyll in the Mediterranean in between. The Indian village setting is a character in itself, with its tea plantations and large houses and rising elevations. Lady Julia wants very badly to be Brisbane's partner in his inquiries, and he very badly wants to keep her safe from the dangers of his line of work. This conflict divides them emotionally and makes reasonable their physical separation, when he stays in Darjeeling while she goes with her sister to help Portia's estranged lover, Jane. It's as well that the physical separations work to support the plot, in the end, because I must prefer when Julia and Brisbane are together. There are a few callback... more characters in this book, and one or two surprises in the new ones, and some defining emotional moments that are deftly done.
review 2: This series is always good about keeping the plot threads going through series as a whole. The cousins from 2 have returned here for a bit of resolution. Foundations are laid and we find others here as well. No plot spoilers for previous books but enough to make them series not stand alone more than by virtue of the characters. Very sad ending to this mystery but it fits in with the facts well. less
