review 1: I had mixed feelings when I started this book. In the first third of the book, Coates spent a lot of time EXPLAINING situations, emotions, and intentions rather than letting the action and dialogue speak for itself. I didn't read the first book in this series, so I mistakenly assumed that all this "explaining" must have been because the target audience were readers who are new to the supernatural fantasy genre and who need a little hand holding. The first half of the book is also when the heroine, Hallie, keeps leaving an all-important weapon in the car. How many times does a person have to repeat the same mistake before they stop being a heroine and just start being annoying? Hallie also withholds certain information from friends because she doesn't want to upset anyon... moree...information such as, if you let such-and-such happen, you will die. Again, heroic becomes annoying. However, the "explaining" tapered off and the action ratcheted up. I should have taken Maker's advice: "Stuff happens when it happens." Great characters and I love how they all get a piece of the action. I want my own Maker.
review 2: Ok, so the first book was good, but as I stated in my review I thought the main character was too similar to Mercy Gunderson. This sequel completely threw out that idea, and developed a tough, but dysfunctional character who you have to admire. You wind up cheering her on, feeling her losses, triumphs, and pains. By the end of the story, you just have to admire her inner strength and constitution. I can't wait for the next one! less
