review 1: Oops! Mixed up my reviews. This isn't my favorite Kincaid/James installment, but we get to see Gemma's detective skills at work more and more as time passes. Also we get to learn a bit about sculling, but not as much as I'd've liked. One thing I noticed the family dialogues becoming so natural. I laughed out loud at some of the interchanges because they were so spot on. Ending as it did, can't wait to start the next book.
review 2: "No Mark Upon Her" is the first mystery I have read by Deborah Crombie, and I truly enjoyed it. The book is the 14th in a series so there was a passage telling the backstory of the main detectives for readers like me, but unlike many long-running series, this one didn't leave the detectives' character development to that single
... morepassage. Limited character development is one of the main reasons I tend not to like long-running series. Unfortunately, that fault did show up in two of the secondary characters, but they were not pivotal to this story. The mystery focuses on the unexpected death of a rower/policewoman. The investigation unfolds in a believable way and most loose ends are wrapped up. What I really enjoyed was Crombie's storytelling. This book offers scenes to enjoy rather than a tension-filled rush to the end. I plan to try another of her mysteries.Caution: Deals with unsolved rape cases. less
