review 1: I would recommend reading this book to children that are perhaps in 3rd/4th grade. The narrator of the story speaks to the reader in an interesting way, different from many children's books. He tells us a story about Lincoln's good friend growing up that saved his life by pulling him out of the creek. The author points out that unless you were actually at the scene of Lincoln's saving or any other event, you may not know all the details of what happened. This could lead into a discussion on primary and secondary sources. The author also is informing her audience that even though Lincoln and Austin do not meet again, Lincoln would not have been our 16th president if it weren't for Austin.
review 2: The story is a made-up event in young Abe Lincoln's life in Kent
... moreucky. With his "frontier friend" Austin, Abe crosses a swollen, fast-running creek. Trouble ensues of course (they DID promise Mrs. Lincoln they would not go near the creek!), and we nearly lose Abe! The voice of the author goes far in making this a delightful read-aloud for primary grades. The artist's hand appears in some of the pictures, as though he isn't quite finished with the illustration before the author tells that part of the story. Great fun. less

This is a cute enough story though only tangentially related to Lincoln.
