review 1: I loved this book. And I loved the movie. I enjoy any book that focuses on people choosing to change and being surprised along the way that what they were really searching for was meaning and purpose in life. This book highlights just that. The cast of characters is vast, the relationships ever changing and the setting exquisite. As I often do, I listened to this story. The narrator does such a beautiful job with her Indian and English accents between so many characters. I could feel myself riding with them in a rickshaw on the streets of India or sitting at the table for dinner in the hotel garden. In a culture that highly values the elderly, India provides the perfect setting for transformation of this cast of characters. Hope is restored for some, truth tumbles out and n... moreew loves emerge...even when least expected. I guess that is true for so many of us!
review 2: I finished this book last week and am still thinking about my response. Truly, it is a melancholy story, full of the pathos of old age in a world where youth prevails and has little time or energy for the elderly. The community of senior citizens who inhabit the pages of the novel are hard to pigeonhole and that speaks to a recognition of the complexity of people regardless of their stage in life. The extra characters in the novel who are Indians of lower castes smile through their toils, giving the European seniors pause as they consider their own and their offsprings' grasping and searching for happiness. In the end, Moggach offers a sliver of hope and the possibility for change no matter one's age or condition. less
