review 1: I would love to have given this books more than 3 stars. As it is beautifully written, and a totally novel concept. The main problem I have got with it is Bilodo.I just couldn't take to him at all, wanted to tell him to get a grip, look around him, and appreciate his actual life and the people in it.He became more and more irritating to me.As a pragmatist I can't see how anyone can just leave work for 6 months. But I suppose that's not the point of the book.Is it a romance?More like an infatuation I think.I would have liked Ségolène's view point, or to get to know her better.Liked the ending though, it's good to have a surprise to conclude a book with.
review 2: It’s a very short easy read which I think I needed to get myself back into reading and I was so
... morehappy with the book. The cover was honestly just too beautiful to pass up. You don’t actually get attached to the characters (except Bill the fish), in fact, you may well hate the protagonist, Bilodo, but the story is so intense and quirky. I loved this from start to finish. It’s very heavily influenced by Japanese/Oriental culture throughout which I love, I love poetry and there isn’t a moment in the book where poetry isn’t the main theme. The ending is amazing, you would never expect it. The Peculiar Life of a Lonely Postman will make you think about life and what you have, parts of it make you jealous at the luxury Orient theme recurring in Grandpre’s apartment and parts will make you happy you aren’t as creepy as Bilodo. The book is based in Montreal and I was fascinated by the locations in the book, Thériault doesn’t use many locations flitting between the post depot, Bilodo’s apartment #1, Bilodo’s apartment #2, The everlasting staircase of Rue des Hêtres, and Madelinot. However, you don’t feel like the book is lacking dimension you feel as though you are in the book, you become so familiar with the places that you know them for yourself. When reading this book you begin to forget that Thériault actually wrote the beautiful Haiku’s that are throughout the book making you realise the bountiful talent he has. The book is definitely an easy read but in no way does this make the story any less complex, deep and thought provoking. less
