review 1: ***Some spoilers!***After finishing the first in this trilogy, A Silent Ocean Away, I bought the second and third books immediately because it was such an amazing book. Decision and Destiny picks up where A Silent Ocean Away left off. Charmaine is still employed as governess with the DuVoisin family on the island of Charmantes, and her relationship with Paul DuVoisin, the illegitimate son of Frederic, seems to be budding a bit more. Frederic DuVoisin, the patriarch of the family, has married his first wife's sister, Agatha, after the death of his second wife, Colette, and she is a horrible, nasty woman who you will hate from minute one. His estranged son, John, returns in this installment, in the middle of the night, and immediately starts to rile things up in the hous... moree. He's one of those characters you'll love to hate because, although he's pretty harsh with his insults, he's absolutely hysterical and you will find yourself laughing out loud at some of the zingers he throws at people. He doesn't play favorites and says exactly what's on his mind, so he often ends up saying the things you wish you could say to some of the other characters. He quickly became my favorite character, and it became clear not long after he arrived that he was going to be a huge part of the story. At the end of the book, John leaves the DuVoisin house on bad terms with his half-brother and father, and we're left to wonder if/when he'll be back. Because it seems fairly obvious that he and Charmaine have developed feelings for each other, the final novel in the trilogy is an absolute necessity. The author's don't seem to be worried about a story that contains only happy endings, so be prepared for a very sad twist in the plot. If you haven't already read A Silent Ocean Away, the first book in the trilogy, you should. The second installment is a bit sad compared to the other two, but it's worth it in the end.
review 2: I enjoyed the story aspect of this book very much. That is the reason I gave it 4 stars. However, I did not enjoy the writing style of this author. I really love books written about this period but the author made little to no attempt at taking the reader back to the 1800's. The language sounded as if I were talking to you today. Fun story though and now I will definitely read the other two books. Reading them out of order is probably not the best way to enjoy the storyline. less
