review 1: I loved this book. It is highly intriguing and thought provoking. Especially the last few chapters that Yuvanashwa undergoes is fascinating. The realization that dawned upon Yuvanashwa is a fantastic climax for the novel. Pattanaik's first ever fictional attempt on the tales of Mahabharata didnt disappoint me. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every chapter. The additional tales of Bhangashwa or Ila, Bahugami, Shikandi is an awesome attempt by the author to justify Yuvanshwa's position as a PREGNANT KING. The role of Yaksha and the little Brahmin boys that turned out to be little ghosts Sumedha and Somavat(i) is an exciting read from the book. Shilavati character is profound and respectable. She had done everything right in bringing up her son rightfully to the throne. Yuvanas... morehwa's 3 wives and their tales helped the author to fill up roles, but not highly described, except for Keshini and her chattering nature, which is a humorous section from the book.Overall a must read for everyone.
review 2: Off late, I have developed interest in reading books on Indian Mythology. The modern day authors have attempted to bring logic to those stories, which might even have included a few modifications. This one book, "The Pregnant King" is however different. The author has tried to amalgamate the characters from Indian Mythology with new fictional characters, due to which the number of characters in this book are a little too overwhelming. The story line tends to lose its track at quite a lot of points but by the end of it, the author has pulled back all the stories.Of Course, there are a few interesting conclusions drawn from the story, like the insignificance of the demarcation between genders, yet I did not specifically like the analogy with Lord Shiva where his blue throat is considered poisonous. The writing style of the book is quite interesting. less

A good read, though a lil drag with numerous characters & scenes. But worth a read
