review 1: I haven't read a lot of Steampunk novels, but I greatly enjoyed this one. Devon Monk perfectly blends magic, steam tech, and the grimy west for a unique world that hopefully expands to even greater detail in future novels. Character wise, each one brought a different view and perspective that seamlessly entwined in the big finale. One problem with the shifting character perspective is that the reader knows what each character knows. This makes the characters feel ignorant or oblivious, especially late in the story. Overall, I loved this story, its one of hate first novels I've truly enjoyed reading in a while, with characters that felt like more than vessels for the reader. It just slowed down a bit too much near the end for me, before the finale.

... moreed it! I've been a bit leery to start this as I enjoy Devon Monk's other series, and wasn't too incredibly impressed with steampunk in general. Steampunk to me seemed to just require sprinkling in certain terms like "dirigible" and "corset" and "monocle" and "parasol" to be part of the genre. Here DM lays a solid foundation for her work-building and the magic makes sense. I'm looking forward to the next in series! less
