review 1: This was a weird book for me; it falls under the very strange and extremely limited category of, "I have no idea if I like this book or not". The entire time I read it, the mantra constantly running thru my mind was "Do I like this book? Do I hate this book? How the heck do I feel about this book?" I read this a few years ago and I remember it as being a dark story, something I've found I don't really care for. I read a lot of "dark stories" (suspense) that cover serial killers, rape, horrific murders, war, etc., but the stories themselves aren't depressing...those are the types of "dark stories" that I don't like. I hate reading a book and feeling morose the entire time and even after I've finished reading it. I was thinking about this book recently and a few years remove... mored from having read it, I've finally forced myself to take a stand on whether or not I like this book. I've decided that if I wouldn't ever read a book again or I wouldn't recommend it to someone, then I don't like the book. That being said...I don't like this book.
review 2: I knew I was going to enjoy this book from the beginning and I was not disappointed all the way through to the end. It encompassed my two favorite genres of mystery and historical fiction, and I loved the storytelling within a storytelling. The characters are magnificently drawn and the author has a way with words. The language is beautiful, with phrases such as, "she pegged them on the line where the sun and wind woke up the unsuspected pattern of pink and yellow roses" or "Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes -- characters even -- caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you.” Gorgeous. I sunk into this book and just allowed it to envelop me. The story felt like a good friend that I could not wait to get back to, to hear all of her tales and enjoy the timbre of her voice. less

It really pulls you in. One doesn't know until the end the twists and turns of this book.

A gothic tale to curl up and read by the fire on a rainy night.
