review 1: Kind of an odd story, but Setterfield is an amazing reader. I would recommend this book if for nothing but the prose.
review 2: So Delicious, I devoured it! I didn't seek out Setterfield's book while at the library, but was browsing for a good read and something about her book called to me. After reading the description, I decided to make it my fiction selection for that trip. I am so glad that I did.Setterfield has clearly researched the topic of twins to give her book an air of realism that no fiction writer should ignore. On top of that, she masterfully uses language to conceal a clearcut time. Did the story of Ms. Winter and her biographer happen 100 years ago or was it more recent? There are some context clues that might lead one to a conclusion but other... mores tend to obfuscate a clear understanding of time and that's a good thing - it allows her book to continue to continue to draw breath in succeeding generations. There will likely come a time when it no longer does, given our rapidly advancing technology, but by then this book should be considered a classic.Setterfield is one of the best writers of using an economy of description to entice the reader's imagination without murdering white space with many unneeded details. The stories, for there truly are many threads here, intrigue readers to enter this world, just the right mix of details sets the stage and then the reader's imagination can finish the rest. It really is a near perfect balance of writer allowing reader to collaborate in the creation of fiction.My only regret is that I finished this one so quickly. less
