review 1: i waited a looooong time for another book by setterfield (i LOVED the thirteenth tale) but this book was a little disappointing. it's not bad by any means, it just doesn't have the oomf i was hoping it would. interesting characters, mysteries unsolved, but for some reason i didn't care as much as i should have about the trials of our hero to make it an extraordinary journey for me. i will certainly read her next book.
review 2: What a strange and delightful book. It is subtitled 'A Ghost Story' and I guess that's as close to picking a genre as I could get. Not a classical ghost story or any other as far as I know. Regardless of which, I really enjoyed it. The author has an easy to read style and a way of quite often saying a lot with a few words and I was happy... more to go with the flow. I think this is meant as a fable, but others may read it differently.Make sure you read the very last section, after the acknowledgements, where the author talks about the rook and other influences on this story. As entertaining and as beautifully written as the story itself:"Although,in illustration of the divinely elusive nature of memory, writing this has stirred something that does seem to present itself as a thing once experienced: a kerfuffle of some kind, an arm swooping down between me and the sun to knock something away, the words 'Shoo! Get away!' - but it is faint and I do not trust it."Exactly how I feel about memory these days. If only I could so easily put it into words. less
