review 1: Book Title: A Rock is Lively by Dianna Hutts AstonShort Description of the Book: This book is absolutely stunning from the word choice to the drawings of beautiful rocks and gems. I cannot believe that I have taught rocks and minerals without this in my collection! Students will be captivated from the very first page. It is a must have!FOCUS: Features I would Use in a Mini-Lesson: 1-Informational Text Structure: Comparison. Throughout this text, rocks and minerals are compared to other items. For example, there is a comparison of how rocks are made out of a mix of minerals, just as cookies are made out of a mix of ingredients. The author even included a creative “recipe” for a Lapis Lazuli, which is a unique idea that students will enjoy. 2-Informational Text Featu... moreres- This text is full of labels on every single page, diagrams, and even cutaways! TEACH: CCSS Connection: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. • *CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.2a Introduce a topic clearly and group related information in paragraphs and sections; include formatting (e.g., headings), illustrations, and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.• *CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.2b Develop the topic with facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples related to the topic.• CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.2c Link ideas within categories of information using words and phrases (e.g., another, for example, also, because).• *CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.2d Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic.• CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.2e Provide a concluding statement or section related to the information or explanation presented.Mini Lesson- Use this book to open your fourth grade Science Unit on Rocks and Minerals. 1-Have students take a look at the title of this book: A Rock is Lively. What does Lively mean? Why do you think the author would choose that particular word to describe a rock? Why does it go against the words that we associate with rocks? 2-Share the book A Rock is Lively with students. 3- Turn and talk about informational text features that are noticed- specifically all the comparisons throughout the book. Have students point out text evidence to support their thinking. 4-Write into the Day-Have students write other words they would use to describe rocks and minerals. Encourage them to begin a nonfiction piece about rocks that is written using comparisons to familiar items. Students may need time to read more texts that are written with the comparison structure. 5-Author’s Chair-Allow students to share what they are working on. EXPECTED OUTCOME: Students will be able to explain why using a comparison to familiar object helps the reader understand the information that is being presented about rocks and minerals. Students will be able to come up with descriptive words and other comparisons about rocks.
review 2: During our summer vacationing we came across various rocks and precious stones. This book was a great follow up for me and my kids. It is beautifully illustrated and insightful. It also pairs nicely with the study of ancient civilization as it touches on petroglyphs, mortar and pestal usage and shows a large beautiful drawing of Lapis Lazuli which the Ishtar Gate of the ancient city of Babylon was made out of. This book paired nicely with an early reader book by National Geographic Kids entitled, "Rocks and Minerals". I will definitely be checking out other books by this author and illustrator, Aston and Long. less
