review 1: Title: The Moon Over Star by Dianna Hutts Aston (2008). Short Description of the Book: This is a historical fiction book that takes place during the first moon landing in 1969. It is told from the point of view of a young girl and discusses her and her family’s excitement and worries with the first moon landing. Focus: Narrative features I would use in a mini-lesson:1)This story uses a lot of descriptive detail to help you visualize the events. For example: “The astronauts bounding across the moon like ghosts on a trampoline.” Another vivid scene created with detail in the text: “We spread blankets and folding chairs on the edge of the yard, where the buffalo grass grew thick and soft. The cornstalks whispered while we gazed at the pearly slice of moon, and the st... morears, gleaming like spilled sugar.”2)Formatting/Paragraph structure- This story uses a different format than typical paragraph structure. Each page consists of one “paragraph” separated into lines, similar to a poem. Each line starts with a capital letter, even if it is in the middle of a sentence. Teach:CCSS Connection-W.3.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. a.Use dialogue and descriptions of actions, thoughts, and feelings to develop experiences and events or show the response of characters to situations. Mini-lesson Sequence-1)I would provide students with a copy of the text if possible, or display using a document camera or digital copy so students can see the descriptive language and formatting. 2)Read aloud sections of the text and discuss how the author used descriptive language. Have students close their eyes and visualize the scenes. How did the author’s use of descriptive language help you picture what was happening? 3)Reread and have students pay attention to the formatting. How did the author structure this text? Why do you think she chose to write it this way? 4)Have students try adding descriptive words and language to their narratives. They could also try out a new narrative structure, besides using typical paragraphs. 5)Have a few students share part of their narrative where they added descriptive words and language or show how they tried a new narrative structure. Expected Outcome: Students will learn how to use descriptive words and language to help their audience visualize what is happening. Students will also learn a way to structure their writing, besides using paragraphs and indenting.
review 2: Setting: July 20, 1969 One families day during the historical event of the moon landing.Repeating line: "Once upon a summer's....morning; noon; nightThe girl is excitedGrandpa's point of view: "Why spend all that money to to to the moon when there's so many folks in need right here on earth?"At the end, we learn the girl's name is Mae. We are certainly lead to beleive this Mae is Mae Jamisen. This isn't her family story, but what a wonderful premise for a book - What was going on with xyz when such and such happened. less
