review 1: I loved this novel. The story takes place in a single day in the small town of Juliet, Saskatchewan, and some would say that nothing much happens. But the inner lives and social rituals of the inhabitants are poignant and gripping. I always admire a writer who can take so-called 'ordinary life" and make poetry of it, and Warren is one of those people. The prose is as simple and clear as the title suggests, and Warren's clear-eyed reverence for the beauty of the prairies and for the dwindling prospects of small agrarian communities is poignant. The novel portrays the joys, worries, jealousies, and loyalties of the townspeople with deep gentleness, yet without undue sentimentality.
review 2: "earned their living recently off their contract to collect pregnant mar
... morees' urine for the hormone-replacement industry" ( Premarin ). Page 50 . Who ever thought this would be a good idea??Hanging from the swingset:"He can still feel sick at the thought of how close they came to losing her. He felt no satisfaction in the knowledge that he'd saved her life, only terror that he might not have". page 178 ; so true"The pleasurable in life,..is never without a flip side." page 178Finally, my favorite ( how often do we all do this ):"maybe she looks at him and sums up his life, as he did hers, by what she knows from talk". page 265; Bottom line: I felt it was a book about nothing, none of the stories were related, and I got the impression the author was trying to use metaphors, but I am never good at guessing what the bigger picture is supposed to be. An example of this was at the end when Shiloh was looking at the bull rider in the picture, but seeing himself instead. Just tell me what you are thinking instead of leaving me guessing. less
