review 1: I love multiple perspectives that fit together (Faulkner!) so even though I did find this so-spare-as-to-border-on-grim, I really thought it was beautifully written. It is set in a town in Saskatchewan. Even though I don't see why this should seem different than, say, Montana, it still had its own sense of place that only added to the strength of the novel. Favorite character: the guy that refuses to quit his impulsive 100 mi horseback journey in part because of inertia. Is all Canadian literature populated by persons just slightly off axis, a la "come thou, tortoise"?
review 2: If you've ever wondered what rural life is like on the Canadian prairie, this book is for you. Although I live in rural Alberta, the fictional Juliet, Saskatchewan could be my hometow
... moren, and the story's characters my neighbours. Everything about the book is authentic; the characters, the setting, even the terminology. Although nothing especially extraordinary happens, this is as true-to-life story as I've ever read. The book won't likely become a literary classic, but I thank author Dianne Water for feeling stories like ours are worth telling. less
