review 1: A fascinating look at writers and writing. This novel not only captures the struggles (and occasional triumphs) of the writer, but the many compromises and injuries along the way. Through the central characters, it explores the many ways to be (or try to be) a writer and the many false paths that may present themselves. Also, a vivid picture of the writing culture in 60s-era San Francisco, Portland, and LA.
review 2: This book was recommended to me by my husband. He said it was the best book about writers and writing that he had ever read. I also enjoyed it immensely. ... moreter's novel. I think he did a superb job. The story takes place in the late 1950s/early 1960s in Northern California and Portland, Oregon. The principal characters are all writers and their lives become intertwined. I loved the voice of this book and really cared about the characters. Carpenter captures the excitement of the times and draws exacting portraits of the writers and bohemians who inhabited these two geographically distinct communities. less
