review 1: This book is a fascinating look at a truth written out of history. I've often talked with my students about the hatred of the Italian immigrants-they are amazed as they are unaware. Rightfully, we think of African Americans or Jews when we think of groups persecuted in history but little is discussed about the Chinese, the Irish, the Japanese, etc.A powerful book that spells out the truth behind lynching and hatred-it all came down to money. I thought the book was slow to read in the middle which is why I am only giving it a three.
review 2: I actually think this would have been a fantastic nonfiction text-- I loved the concept of the story and knowing the information from the afterward was more powerful than the writing. It didn't grab me as I began reading it
... more though I thought the summary was captivating and borrowed it thinking I would love it. It's certainly a different perspective since it's about Sicilian men in the south and a lynching that took place when the men were killed for serving a black man before a white one at an establishment. Wish I could have enjoyed it more. less
