review 1: This was the first Brunetti novel I have read. It was well written and the digressions and musings made it appealing albeit not too challenging. Some of the secondary characters have obviously become a bit formulaic and there are some minor "continuity faults" in the plot. I'm now ready a second recent volume in the series which has a little more intensity, but overall these novels feel like holiday reading for people who like good writing. That's a good thing.
review 2: I thought this book had a really horrifying end, and as I was reading it before bed and then could not sleep, I have a negative impression of it, although it was not badly done. Generally I feel like Leon's books have gotten really dark, and there is so much complaining/ lamenting the state of... more Italian politics and corruption. That is definitely justified, but I've had to move these out of the category of light and entertaining reads. less
