review 1: I have yet to read a Guido Brunetti mystery that I didn't like, and this one was no exception. Since I've recently viewed a painting of the Rape of Lucretia, the reference in the book was more meaningful. I like the fact that Leon can hold the reader's attention without a huge amount of violence. I'm intrigued by Brunetti's reading of the classics--I wonder if Europeans have more interest in doing that the Americans.

Paola, his wife, along with the other strong women surrounding him also create added tension when Franca Marinello, "La Superliftata", enters the story because her appearance causes such a strong reaction. It was this character that constantly caused me to wonder what Leon meant by the title, and wonder about her as I read the book. From this focal point I was able to absorb the rest of the mystery as it unfolded, and learn about the modern issues Venice is facing. less
