review 1: Would give this book 3.5 stars. Good story. Rachel is raising her niece after the death of her sister,Alice. Alice's husband went off to war and died and Alice gave up on living and when she died her mother also gave up on life. Alice died during childbirth. For 8 years times were very hard and then a mysterious stranger comes back to town and things are going to change. Threats are also being made against Rachel and her family to sell the boardinghouse they live in. Enjoyable and easy read and book stays interesting thru out.
review 2: The last book I read was a literary masterpiece. This one sure paled in comparison. It was full of cliches, caricature characters, and the cover picture didn't match the book! Why did I finish it? - because I have liked o
... morether Dorothy Garlock books and thought it had to get better.- Mason Tucker married Alice and then went off to war in France.- He was missing in action and presumed dead. Alice dies heartbroken during childbirth after losing Mason.- Her sister, Rachel, is left to raise the child who she lives with along with her mother who hasn't been out of her room since Alice's death and her drunkard Uncle Otis.- Fast forward to 1926. Charlotte, now 8 yrs. old, discovers a desperately sick hobo in the woods behind their house. Rachel and Otis drag him back to the boardinghouse, and Rachel nurses him back to health. They practically instantly fall in love.- Guess who it is? Mason who let everyone think he was dead because he feared their reactions from a scarred cheek injured in an explosion during the war.-Then we have his nefarious banker brother who is trying to get Rachel's boardinghouse because a lumber company wants to build a mill in that spot, and he will make a lot of money out of the deal.-The rest is pretty predictable, and the ending was mushy sweet!!! Pass it up. less
