review 1: An semi-apocolyptic drama that is light on drama but heavy on spirituality, religion and relationships. Not one of Coupland's best books but still an enjoyable read. The real-time situation combined with the mysterious incident that brings, and keeps, the five characters together is an intriguing concept but is let down by the cast being little more than mouthpieces to argue religion and what it is to be alive rather than having any real distinctive characters.
review 2: It's the end of the world and in a matter of hours petrol prices rose and chemical warfare obliterated the United States, trapping several individuals in the lounge of an airport bar...If you're going to do the end of the world, either stick to the far left with zombies or the ragnorak, or to t
... morehe far right with realism. This was somewhere in the middle as it attempted a realistic scenario, but then the circumstances and speed were entirely unrealistic.Luckily the apocalypse was only a mechanism to bring the characters together who would spend the entire book on self-musings, discussing human nature and the modern world, developing a little, loving and learning (not a lot of laughing though, you know with the end if the world and everything). Unfortunately, discussions were a lot of wank, the characters no more than vessels for different opinions (mostly the author's who I'm guessing is middle-aged and grumpy), despite their various backgrounds. There were too many anecdotes that causes the character to question modernity, while they mostly discussed religion and humanity. The author spends a lot of time categorising people and he also tries for a bit of grit based on the circumstances, but it's very rushed and you don't quite care in the end.Overall, this book is wanky. It's what I would imagine Chuck Palaniuk writing after spending a year in coffeeshop while wearing a beret. There are good ways of delivering philosophical rhetoric, and this isn't it. less
