review 1: The first third was nearly a 4 star. Intriguing premise and situational tension, plus the characterizations were better than average for this genre. Reminded me completely of a good Michael Crichton. And then about 1/2 way in, it just started to get too weird to believe the means of transmitting the disease and some of the logistics to L.A. outcomes. Going from about 880 A.D. to present and back again destroyed all tension, for me, after the King and the Dwarf got into the killing/eating orgies. I almost gave it a 2 star because I had to force myself to finish the last 1/3rd. Too bloody, too much a dire dwarf and king cartoon monster scenario for me by the last 1/3rd.3 stars for the premise and effort.
review 2: The book was very interesting as the author blend
... moreed fact with fiction in this story about the Mayan end of their calendar known as the Long Count, and a coinciding epidemic. The characters were well developed and the writing style was very effective for this type of novel, and the suspense needed. My only issue was the tying up of loose ends at the end, thus the four rather than five stars. With all the detailed technicality throughout the novel, the author really skimmed how the "cure" was derived, especially how one of the protagonists was effectively cured. I recommend this book and found it to be a good read. less
