review 1: Spirit is a 12 year old girl who lives on remote Bald Island with her psychic father. Eventually Spirit begins to be visited by the ghost of her dead dog who helps her uncover the truth behind the mysterious deaths of the native island dogs. This was a nice little read full of heart. Well written and paced, it's a good choice for young readers. It treats its audience with respect by offering a introspective and thoughtful piece while still maintaining age-appropriate themes and language. To be fair, I would say this would rate more of a 3.5 for me as the content wasn't completely my usual taste (I tend to prefer a touch more fantasy) but I think it is a compelling enough story to bump it up to 4 stars for the sake of Goodreads system.
review 2: One of my favorit
... moree new middle grade titles, and definitely my favorite of the fall! Spirit is a believable and ferocious heroine with just enough of a sense of humor to balance her sense of social justice, Ghost Sky is a fantastically unique sidekick, and Bald Island is the perfect setting for a story where the supernatural is commonplace and a 12 year old with a gift can come into her own with style :) less
