review 1: I wish I had been able to like this book more. Reading Ann Patchett's gushing introduction to this collection of short stories really built up a sense of anticipation which left me faintly disappointed when I finally finished them. Although each story really is very short (most no longer than 10 pages), they demand a lot of the reader, as you are launched straight into a character or scenario, with no real context, and it is hard to understand what is going on in a lot of them (and perhaps, in some instances, to even care). The characters on the whole remain as opaque at the end of each story as they were at the beginning. I kept dipping into the book all week, but with no real commitment to finish it. I can see that the author is very talented, and that each sentence is v... moreery carefully constructed and she has a distinctive style to her writing but overall, I was underwhelmed.
review 2: This book had high reviews so I decided to give it a try. I am not really a fan of short stories but thought I should expand my horizons. I felt cheated in a way while reading these stories. I found that they were much too short and did not allow me enough time to really become captured. I wanted the stories to continue on longer than they did. Some stories I did not get into at all. I was really hoping that this book of short stories was going to change my attitude towards short stories in a positive way but it did not. It really only confirmed my original negative opinion of them. I was really hoping for more here. less
