review 1: I read the book because I really liked the movie, overall I enjoyed the book but I think the changes made for the movie lead to a superior story in pretty much every way.In the movie the character of Irene gets a much bigger and better developed role, which I think is a smart decision. In the book she's a background character and her role is primarily for the main character to pine over her. Her best scene in the movie is instead handled by Sandoval who gets a little extra development as a result, but I think the scene works a lot better with a woman in the role.Of course, this means Sandoval gets a little more development in the book, which is good because he's probably the most fun character in both versions, but his ultimate fate is a lot more interesting and poignant i... moren the movie. Not to mention memorable.Likewise, the big reveal towards the end works better in the movie, I think. I don't want to reveal too much but in the book it's a lot more passive for the main character (I call him that since his name is Esposito in the movie but Chaparro in the book) and more of a wrap-up than the discussion and interaction he has in the movie.Still, I enjoyed the book. It has a lot more interesting information on the state of Argentina at the time the book is set, it develops the character of the only competent police inspector in a way I really enjoyed whereas the movie rightly relegates him to a very minor role. It also probably makes a little more sense overall as far as why certain people end up working together and why they end up pursuing the main character, but I think it worked fine in the movie as well.
