review 1: Slow to get started with long, unnecessary family introductions, it really begins on Chapter 13. The boy Raff's growing up in the woods is evocative, and the inner world of the ant colony is interesting, making up somewhat for an essayistic and distanced style. I enjoyed the portrait of Harvard. But the novel feels increasingly less real as it goes and Raff is threatened unbelievably by a fundamentalist preacher for no real reason. Other than religion is evil and tells people to dominate and destroy the world—the point is the next world—and Raff loves nature. This is an old and tired idea. One of those untrue notions about the so-called Sky God religions that appeal to our species' current dark view of itself. Humans have done horrible things to the planet, no doubt. B... moreut we are far more than ants, and religion is not evil.
review 2: Many thanks to Dianne Ford for the suggestion on this one! There are so many things I like about this book: excellent characters, enticing scientific writing, compelling ecological themes, quirky sense of humor, etc., etc. One of my favorite lines is: "Every species walks a tightrope through ecological time. Launched up it, there is only one way to keep going, and a thousand ways to fall off." Ain't it the truth?!! less

Lots of info about ants which is E. O. Wilson's expertise. Excitement came at the end.
