review 1: In Abomination, we see a writer, emerging from the womb, pen at the ready. He made a few new-author errors, but was eager, and had a good story. In his second book, Suffer, you see this new writer is willing to take on subject matter that most authors will not touch. His pen is steady, and he is learning more. Now we come to his third book, Without. Here is where the author fails me (but clearly it doesn't take away from his rating, and there's a reason)..he's decided to jump on the 'what's popular now' bandwagon. *sigh* Without is about mother nature taking back, and correcting what us humans have tried for so long to destroy. She's removed our technology, she's wiped out the grid. Everyone is suddenly thrown back into what is basically the 19th century when it comes to t... moreechnology. Now people will need to learn how to live without all the battery and electrical powered things they once had...that is, if they can survive what mother nature is throwing down...and each other. E.E. Burton's writing style is changing with each book he writes, he's more sure of himself in this book than he was with the last, and it's such a HUGE change from his first book, he is definitely an author to watch out for. I think he's still trying to throw humor into the story where he feels he can, but it still feels a little awkward with the rest of the story/dialog, but other than that, I'm impressed. I can't wait to read more from him, I can only imagine what the next book will bring.
review 2: I bought this book on a whim while browsing on Amazon and was pleasantly surprised to find it well written and intriguing. So intriguing that I read the whole thing in one day, when I should have been working. Oops. The story is told from the point of view of a man who lost his love in a blackout a few years back. Since then, he's been prepared for the worst to happen. When it does and the world ends, he's ready for it. Unfortunately, the world isn't so ready for him. While there are some scenes that are a little fantastical, Without covers the scenario of what would happen if everything stopped pretty well. It's enough to jolt you into becoming a prepper if you aren't already. If you enjoy end of the world stories, this one is good. less
