review 2: Ivy Granger, and her best friend Jess (better known as Jinx) own Private Eye detective agency.Ivy has the power of visions that are brought on just by touching objects. This is known as psychometry - "the supernatural ability to see event
... mores, usually traumatic, in an object's history" (Stevens, EJ, 2012, pg. 8). Ivy also has the ability to detect paranormal creatures and is also able to see through the glamour of the fae. When a disguised demon come to Private Eye, Ivy knows that something sinister is at hand. A local witch has the city protected, therefore a demon of any kind should show up on her radar, except this one doesn't. Forneus, the demon comes requesting help of Ivy.The kelpies, mystical horses known to lure humans into the water, drown them, and then eat them, hired the demon ~ who is curiously also an attorney ~ to obtain Ivy's help. The each uisage are now in the waters near the city. They devour all part of a human except their liver (eww...gross!?). The kelpies, selkies, mermaids, and other allied groups defend the city's waters against the each uisage under normal circumstances. Except, these aren't normal circumstances ~ the kelpie King is missing ~ and the kelpies want Ivy's hellp to find him so they can resume ridding the waterways of the each uisage. What ensues is an epic battle reuniting mythical and paranormal groups to protect the city of Harborsmouth and the humans that reside within.Ivy Granger is very much an introvert due to the psychic abilities that control her life. She is usually 100% clothed right down to gloves, so that if someone accidentally brushes her in passing, she doesn't immediately fall victim to the person's past. This keeps her away from crowds, off of sidewalks (she can be found walking in the street more often than not), and hidden away in any shadows she can find in her path. The impending attack by the each uisage has Ivy scouring the city and harbor for potential allies. Will she be able to amass enough paranormal superpower to save Harborsmouth?Shadow Sight is Book 1 in the Ivy Granger, Psychic Detective series by E. J. Stevens.Ivy and her bestie, Jinx, are great duo. Ivy is stand-offish and handles the paranormal part of the cases, whereas Jinx is the super friendly, extroverted, take no prisoners, contract negotiator - which is a good thing and Forneus had no idea what hit him. Ivy admits many times that it's a good thing Jinx takes care of that part of the business; she has the perfect attitude to make friends but is rigid enough to stand her ground and do what's in the best interest of Private Eye, Ivy, and herself. The character development is steady and well done. We get backgrounds on how Ivy and Jinx met, who Ivy's family members were, and how Ivy figured out she had a "gift" as a kid, among other things. As the novel progresses we see Ivy develop a bit more and she learns a secret that has been kept from her through her whole life. A love interest is also introduced for one of the characters and I can't wait to see that unfold. The descriptions given for scenes, characters, the epic battle, etc. are well done. Nothing overly descriptive to the point of boring or making the reader want to skip chunks of the page, and nothing is left lacking in description. There's enough to tell the story and still allow you to imagine it in your head ~ your way. The plot is solid and the characters are likable ~well, except the each uisage, they are not so much. All-in-all this is great first book in a new series.Review Copy Courtesy Of: The author, E.J. Stevens, in exchange for an honest review. less
