review 1: "If one man conquer in battle a thousand times thousand men, and if another conquer himself, he is the greatest of conquerors."I truly believe that if every literate human being on the planet was forced to read and deeply reflect on The Dhammapada, the world would become a better place. This, in my opinion, is the epitome of what a religion should be used for; as a tool for self-improvement and thereby the betterment of the world as whole.
review 2: The Buddha, after attaining nirvana, roamed the streets of northern India preaching his solution to end human suffering. The Buddha preached in Pali, the language of the masses in those times. His disciples collected his teachings in form of short verses. This book is an English translation of those verses that are
... moresimple to understand.Striving to restrain senses and training the mind to breakout of its several years (or several lives) of preconditioning on a daily basis form the essence of the Buddha's teachings.Once you have read this book and practiced what the Buddha preaches for even a few days, you will start feeling more confident and generally happier. less

The (90 page) introduction by Easwaran is a terrific introduction to Buddha's life and philosophy.

The introduction to this guidebook is as valuable as the 6000 year old teachings.
