Josie Marcus, Mystery Shopper
review 1: Elaine Viets' series about a Mystery Shopper who uses her skills to solve crimes has been slowing down. As with the last book, this book began with multiple painful exposition dumps masquerading as real human conversation, with several repetitions of characters summarizing the first few chapters. It was painful and sloppy, and I wanted to quit the book, but I remembered her last one did the same thing and ended up decently, so I kept going. In this book, heroine Josie Marcus is about to marry handsome veterinarian Ted, but a woman with delusional erotomania (who was constantly referred to as demented, a misuse of the term that I found offensive as a mental health professional) makes a scene, convinced he is marrying her instead. She is later found murdered, and Ted's mothe... morer is wrongly incarcerated for it. Josie has to shop through a few decent red herrings before finally solving the case. Again, the last half of the book was pretty good, so I am giving the work three stars, but after two books with such wretched beginnings, I am going to end my involvement here. Congratulations on your wedding, Josie Marcus. In my mind, you live happily ever after. And no one ever tells you to your face the story of your own life.
review 2: I eagerly anticipated reading this mystery for I have been waiting through several books for Josie Marcus to finally marry Dr. Ted, the attractive veterinarian. I did not need a murder or two to pique my interest in the dialogues and interactions between family members and friends. Yet, this is eighth book in the Josie Marcus, Mystery Shopper series in the amateur sleuth category of the mystery genre; there is going to be a murder. Clues for the prospective victim, the first suspect, and the actual murderer were heavy-handed. I recommend this book for fans of the series. less
