@bentleyu April 16

My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.

The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.

In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.

I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Traditionally yesterday would have been Tax Day.

In 2017 Tax Day falls on Tuesday April 18th. That’s the deadline for filing taxes on income earned in 2016. Usually, April 15 is the day taxes are due, but in 2017, that falls on a Saturday. And on Monday, the District of Columbia celebrates Emancipation Day, which is normally April 16, but that’s a Sunday. Emancipation Day affects taxes the same way federal holidays do. Therefore, the tax deadline is pushed out to the following Tuesday, April 18, giving taxpayers three extra days to file their returns.

I wondered what colleges are considered the best when it comes to studying accounting. I came across Bentley University.

Studying accounting means students will be enrolled in the oldest department at Bentley University. The University is located just outside of Boston and has a long tradition of providing a high-quality accounting education. Classes in cost accounting, auditing, financial accounting and information technology help to provide a core understanding of the business world and the role accounting plays in it including preparing students for Tax Day.

The reason for accounting’s importance at Bentley? Bentley University was founded in 1917 as the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance by Harry C. Bentley who served as the school’s president until 1953. President Bentley is shown below:
