review 1: This book is a fantastical twist on Scheherazade, where a renowned chef, Owen Wedgwood, is kidnapped by an infamous woman pirate, Mad Hannah Mabbot, and kept alive on grounds that he can dazzle her with fine cuisine (and, we soon learn, good conversation) each Sunday. As the pirate ship cruises the world, readers are treated to a close up look at the Opium Wars, a poetic exploration of the power of the senses, and best of all to me, the page-turning suspense as the Wedgwood must repeatedly figure out how to create something delicious from his limited resources. I like to think of this as soft porn for hard core local foodies. A great read.
review 2: I love this book! I have fallen head over heels in love with Mad Hannah Mabbot, captain of The Flying Rose. T
... moreold from the perspective of the chef she kidnaps and only lets live under the condition that he prepare her a satisfactory meal each Sunday, this story is sumptuous and delicate in its descriptions as it is swashbuckling and crude in its pirate adventures. The end feels incredibly rushed, but overall it's a fun read full of humor and adventure. less
