review 1: Apparently a lot of people didn't like this book, which is mind boggling to me. I picked it up and couldn't put it down. It is the most underlined book in my collection, and I often pick it back up just to read through some of the quotes. The style is sporadic, ala The Sound and the Fury, and there isn't much plot. It is definitely a book you read for character and ideas, not for story, but as long as you start with that expectation, this read is a beautiful experience.I have just finished reading Night and together these two read like bookends to a life--different narratives but the same ideas viewed first in youth and second in the retrospect of old age. It is as if, in this book, Wiesel says, "and this is what became of us survivors--still searching for meaning in what w... moree experienced. This is how we go on living."
review 2: The book starts off slow and sporadic, with the narrator quickly switching between topics. It doesn't take long to get used to the writing style and I quickly became engrossed in the story. Doriel, an elderly Jewish man, has sought out the help of a psychoanalyst in order to learn the source of his self proclaimed "madness". He discusses his childhood during the Holocaust, the deaths of his family members, and the his relationships both platonic and romantic. The main idea behind his so called "madness" appears from the very beginning to be psychosomatic. The reader sees him struggle with the idea that he has caused, through his many choices - both good and bad - to come to terms with his own self-destructive mental state. The book shows just how easy it is to get in the way of our own happiness. less

I almost put this down- so glad I kept reading. Once you get past the first 47 pages, it's amazing!
