review 1: I like the first book "Endangered" better. I thought that one was more engaging from the start. This one featured chimps (versus bonobos) and was a little slow in the beginning. There was some definite bad guys (hunters/poachers/dishonest, greedy people) and they usually ended up with their just-desserts in the end. Some sad components with the death of a few chimps (like Beggar) or serious injuries (like Drummer), too. I didn't quite see how the book would end, but it seems that Luc was happy enough on the Inside with Mango, Drummer, and his other chimp buddies. I felt like we learned a little bit about Gabon and the environment in which the story took place, but not a great deal. Overall it was a fun book to read with my almost-6 year old, but we both liked "Endangered" ... morebetter.
review 2: It's easy to love bonobos, the great apes at the center of Eliot Schrefer's excellent book Endangered. After all, they're adorable and loving, and as one of our nearest relatives in the animal kingdom, their peaceful societies give humanity something to strive for. Chimpanzees, though, are a little bit scary. After all, they're strong enough (and sometimes violent enough) to rip someone's face off. What really makes them scary though, is that they're so much like us. And even though we see ourselves in them, we still treat them like animals, and not the kind we love. Reading this book, you'll grow to love chimpanzees. You'll see that they ARE like us, so we should treat them with respect, not exploit and hurt them. And you know what? You'll also be reading a fantastic adventure story about survival and finding family in unlikely places. Read this book, and while you're at it, read Endangered, and then wait with great anticipation for Schrefer's next book about great apes. less

DNF. I'll come back to this one if the other committee members think it's worth it.
