review 1: Upon starting this book, I'll admit that while Meda's introduction was delightfully dark, I just wasn't feeling it. I skimmed for a few chapters, perilously close to abandonment. I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt for a few more chapters and before I knew it, the tides had turned. Four stars for excellent characters, snarky dialogue, and an interesting story. Curious to see where this one winds up!
review 2: Okay, I went into this going, "tight writing, well-chosen narrator" and figured that I would give it a solid 4 stars considering it was a "that looks interesting" impulse in the first place. But then this thing just FLOORED me - there were some similarities with other YA books in the same genre I'd read, but not bad ones, and they were the parts ... morethat really bolstered what this book has, which is a wise-cracking, incredibly flawed and interesting, one-of-a-kind heroine. And I can't believe she didn't go the romance route with the first book, which is SMART, so smart; I hope I know where that's going, because we were teased a bit and I'm assuming my hunches are right, but wow, what a great way to keep me interested in a trilogy by refusing to give me something I want. This surprised the hell out of me with the twists, and god help me, I can't wait to read the second one. Major recommendations here. less
