review 1: Well-written, but otherwise decidedly average. This author certainly has a way with words, and this book did take a stab at addressing such heavy topics as feminism, marriage, morals, and the future of reading in general in this digital age. (I will say I objected to her idea that a woman's strength is in her weakness, vulnerability, and dependence upon a man, but I won't get into that.) I felt a few emotional tugs here and there, but in general, I felt that the author was doing her best to pair everyone off, and tell an inspirational but horribly hackneyed story about triumphing over grief. A cute little story, but definitely little more than a poolside read. I will, however, be looking for more by this author, because her prose is beautifully crafted in pl... moreaces.
review 2: I didn't particularly like the first book I read by Elizabeth Berg (The Pull of the Moon) but I thought I'd give her another chance. I wish I hadn't. Although I do like the author's writing style, I just don't like her characters at all. Helen Ames is so pathetically inept and ditzy that I can't relate to her at all. I mean, I like characters with weaknesses, because that makes them more interesting and realistic, but this woman is an embarrassment to the female species! Calling 911 when she has a plumbing problem? Believing (at age 59) that there are monsters under her bed? Constantly asking her adult daughter whether she has brushed her teeth? Not knowing how to replace a lightbulb? How did this woman ever get to be a successful writer? Sorry, but I won't be reading anything else by Elizabeth Berg. less
