review 1: Although I knew about Lady Jane Grey (the Nine Day Queen), I hadn't known about her sisters who also might have claimed the throne of England. This is an excellent novel which tells the story of Katherine and Mary Grey, Jane's younger sisters. It starts with Jane's execution and goes through the reign of Mary I and into Elizabeth's reign. The story is narrated alternately by Mary Grey, Katherine Grey, and Lavina Teerlinc who is a friend of the Greys and a portrait painter.
review 2: Fremantle is pretty clear about the parts of her story which are based in historical fact and which parts are conjecture. Her narrative moves well without the constant repeating dialogue I've seen in other historical fiction writers. She gives Mary and Katherine a three dimensio... morenal depth and an arc of character and change which is both believable and plausible. She's my new favorite historical fiction author. less
