More than Magic
review 1: This was an absolutely fantastic book! It's so rare to see a fantasy/paranormal book these days that actually has a lot of detail on the abilities of whatever fantastical beings or creatures are introduced. This book not only does for a few paranormal beings, but brings in a whole hidden world of magical beings and creatures that is described in rich detail. I liked how the 'discovery' of magic by the heroine, Jen, was actually pretty realistic. The story had slow moving points in appropriate places so that Jen had time to ask questions and process all she had learned about the magical world. I also really like how the author's magical world is still filled with enough technology and common everyday things that readers can easily connect to. It made the magical world reall... morey seem 'hidden in plain sight'.Besides the fantastic world the author has created, full of not-so-typical magical beings, the author has also done an excellent job on defining the different characters throughout the story. I really felt like I got to know each of the main characters through the long individual conversations Jen had with about magic. Each one had a different story to tell and a different outlook on life. The final reason I really love this book was simply the story. It was well though out, action-packed, moved at a great pace and really hooked me in once I'd got past the first few chapters where nothing much has happened. I loved the way the author showed how Jen gradually grew in her magical abilities, and even though she had no noteworthy talents that instantly appeared and spent most of the time terribly afraid - she was still able to use what she had to help her friends. Overall this was an awesome book and I'll be moving on to the sequel, Snow Bound, just as soon as I get some lunch!
review 2: A friend of mine introduced me to this series and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Having recently jumped on the YA band wagon I found this to be a great starting point. Our main character, Jen accidently sees something that she can't explain and in that brief moment her entire world changes. Jen discovers that there is a world of magic out there and she is a part of it. Through the help of her new friends Thomas, TS, Danio, Char and Marianna, Jen is rediscovering herself, learning to be a witch and trying to save the ship from vampires. There is even a new budding romance on the horizon for her.The book was chopped full of action and was fast paced. A definite page turner. I immediately purchased the 2nd book in the series, Snow Bound, upon finishing. I look forward to following this author and seeing what is next for these characters. less

I loved this book. It was really great, but be warned. There is a painful lack of romance.
