review 1: Easily one of the top books for young adult readers and one that everyone should read.Every year, a class of students must write a piece that was nicknamed the Tragedy Paper by former students. By finding a collection of tapes, one student may just have found the topic of his paper. But as he listens to the tapes, which were left behind by another student (an albino student), an obsession and a need for the conclusion of the student's story surfaces. One of the best things about this book was the easy transition between the past and the present and the heartbreaking story between two students. However, the story of Tim fell a bit short. His albino-ness did freak out people enough to be ostracized by other students, but he did nothing to try to change it other than trying t... moreo be closer to Vanessa. Patrick, Vanessa's abusive boyfriend, had a hatred of Tim simply because his girlfriend and Tim were close friends. Also, the mood swings of Patrick were unexplained and the author tried too hard to make him unlikable to the reader. The ending was a surprise to me, though I did see Tim's blindness coming (he was stupid not to wear his sunglasses). Duncan was the real reason I read this book. He was such a relatable character who seemed like he could be a student at my own school. His growing obsession with the tapes became understandable because I, and many other readers, I presume, wanted to see the great mystery of the Tragedy of the year before. His relationship with Daisy was believable, much more so than the relationship of Vanessa and Patrick or Vanessa and Tim. "The Tragedy Paper" has earned all its stars, but it has fallen short in its flashbacks and the character development of the characters in Tim's story.
review 2: This book was very intriguing to me. I had no idea what the tragedy part of the story would be. From the very beginning, you know that there is some tragedy that the narrator, Duncan, was apart of last year. He is being told the other side of the tragedy from a recording of the person the tragedy happened to, Tim. It is a unique story, where you know part of the ending but not how they got there. I was interested to see how they came to the final event and you got to hear what was going through the person's head and the event loomed nearer. I liked the idea of mixing the past with the present. Duncan is learning why what Tim is telling him is so important. You get the idea that something big happens to Tim but not sure what it is. I liked that mystery part of it, but the end kind of let me down. I enjoyed the story but didn't feel satisfied with the ending. I wanted more of a resolution for Tim but you never know what happens after the recording ends. Duncan can finally move on from his part in Tim's tragedy after the recordings. I just wanted more from this book. It had so much going for it that I had such high expectations for its ending. Everything built to this tragedy happening and the aftermath was never fully resolved or felt. Thoroughly enjoyable but not fully satisfying. less
